French Fried Onions

Description

These French Fried Onions are super easy to make, fresh, and versatile. I use them in casseroles, as salad toppings, over sheet pan dinners, or with mashed potatoes. A condiment that the whole family will love in no time, even the pickiest kids. Bonus: no one would guess and taste these are naturally vegan.

Ingredients

  • 2 medium onions
  • 2 cups oat milk
  • 1 cup flour (use gluten free, if needed)
  • salt, pepper to taste
  • oil for frying
Optional add ons:
  • 1 Tbs garlic powder
  • 1 Tbs smoked paprika
  • 1 tsp nutritional yeast
  • 1 tsp onion powder

Instructions

  1. Peel the onions and slice them really thin. Add the slices to a bowl and soak them covered with oar milk for at least 4 minutes.
  2. In another bowl prepare the coating by combining flour, salt, pepper and the optional garlic powder, smoked paprika, nutritional yeast, and onion powder.
  3. Take soaked onions in batches and add them to the flour bowl. Whisk them around until they are fully coated. Repeat until all onions are used.
  4. Heat oil in a pan and add as much of the onions as fit in batches. Fry the onions in hot oil for around 3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy.
  5. Finally take the onions from the pan and if you wish drain excess oil on paper towels.
