Country Gravy

Country gravy made with vegan butter, flour, oat milk, and amazing seasonings is a homemade gravy so versatile that everyone will ask for the recipe in no time. It has all the wonderful flavors that you love and know from an American gravy, but you know it wouldn’t be me if I didn’t add my little twist on it: poultry seasoning.

Country Gravy is poured over a stack of vegan chicken steaks.

White gravy  is always delectable and a staple for so many occasions: from parties, to family dinners, and the holidays.

You will find it commonly served with chicken fried steak, mashed potatoes like my Loaded Mashed Potatoes or the Garlic Mashed Potatoes, and of course biscuits, yummy.

Ingredients needed to make the Country Gravy are collected on a wooden board.

Why this is the most amazing gravy

Better, I tell you this Country Gravy is super easy to make, creamy and so great because of:

Poultry seasoning: yes this is a winner. It adds a lot of great flavor and makes it so good.

Thyme: I know some people are not are big fan (I can count myself in the line) of it, but seriously once added you know the difference in this particular recipe.

Oat creamer (great alternative for heavy cream) and milk: this is my creamy base and what it really needs for a rich and amazing texture what I always want in this condiment.

Steps how to make the base white sauce of the gravy in a saucepan, melting butter and mixing in flour and vegan milk.

Country Gravy ingredients:

  • Oat creamer
  • Plant milk
  • Vegan butter
  • Flour
  • Poultry seasoning
  • Thyme

How to make White Gravy from scratch

In a sauce pan, melt vegan butter, whisk in the flour, cream, and milk.

Give in the poultry seasoning, thyme and a pinch of salt and pepper. Stir and cook until everything is thickening up and creamy.

Leftovers can be stored for around 5 days with a lid on top.

Freezing: add gravy into freezer bags after cooling completely. It can be frozen for around 4 months without sacrificing in taste and texture, because of the flour as binder.

Tips and tricks for this Country Gravy

If you can’t find a creamer, you can use coconut milk, but please always use full fat. You can skip entirely the amount of oat milk and replace with more coconut milk.

I like to serve this over vegan chicken steak as you can see in my step by step pictures, taste always great. Vegetables like broccoli as I do in my Mushroom Gravy is also really good. I steamed my broccoli before a bit so it has a little bit of texture, but is not raw.

You can also add peas or carrots for more texture, and the Country Gravy also tastes great over pasta or rice.

Under “Ingredients” what is “1 cup oat cuisine”?

Hi Edward! It is an oat creamer which is a great plant based alternative to heavy cream. Hope that helps and let me know what you think.
