Yellow mustard creates a tangy and at the same time lightly creamy body to the sauce. You wouldn’t expect a mustard BBQ sauce can be so greatly flavor packed. It is one part of the base that makes this sauce as amazing as it is.

Apple cider vinegar adds another layer of flavor and gives the final result a vinegary note, which is typical and prominent to this condiment.

Soy sauce is truly here to add a umami flavor and along with ketchup it is an easy and cheap substitute for Worchester sauce.

Brown sugar sweetens all up and balances the other savory flavors.

Finally for a little bit of a kick and heat: hot sauce and this is what it takes to make the final result really shine.

How to make Carolina BBQ

To a casserole add mustard, vinegar, ketchup, brown sugar, garlic, onion powder, and hot sauce.

Season with a pinch salt and then heat everything up while stirring. Let simmer cook for around 8 minutes until bubbly.

Remove from stove, let the Carolina BBQ Sauce cool down.

Storage and Tip

Leftovers are great for around 1 week. For freezing let it really cool completely and make individual portion sizes or a bigger. It will be great for around 4 months.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup yellow mustard
  • 1 Tbs apple cider
  • 1/4 tsp onion powder
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/3 cup brown Sugar
  • 2 tsp soy sauce
  • 1 Tbs ketchup
  • 1/4 tsp hot sauce
  • salt, pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Into a casserole add mustard, brown sugar, vinegar, ketchup, garlic, onion powder, hot sauce.
  2. Season with a pinch of salt and pepper.
  3. Heat everything up and cook for 8 minutes until the sauce thickens.
  4. Let it cool down and serve immediately or for further later use store in the fridge.
